El Porvenir is a unique place where coffee has served as a source of revenue and reconciliation. Nicaragua experienced decades of civil unrest which created Sandinista, Somoza and Contra factions that fought for their differing social and political ideals. Now, 50 families from these divergent groups lived together under the common purpose of fostering a better, more peaceful future for their children.
Two hours from the nearest city with only a 1972 Ford Tractor to share among the whole community, getting El Porvenir coffee to market is no small task. Rene (a former Sandinista soldier and the co-op vice president) and Eugenio (president), work hard to make their coffee available to us so that their unique co-op continues to flourish.
